PTT Protects Coastlines With Bakajuan: Back to the Mangroves

Along the coastlines of the Philippines, mangrove forests serve as one of nature’s most powerful defenses. Their dense root systems help reduce the impact of strong waves, prevent coastal erosion, and provide important habitats for marine life. Recognizing the value of these ecosystems, PTT Philippines launched the Bakajuan: Back to the Mangroves project to support reforestation efforts in Kawit and Noveleta, Cavite. The initiative was carried out between 2014 and 2016, focusing on a 20-hectare coastal area in Noveleta, Cavite. During the three-year project, around 200,000 mangrove propagules were planted, helping restore mangrove coverage and strengthen shoreline protection in the area. These efforts were made possible with the participation of more than 1,500 volunteers. The project was inspired in part by similar environmental programs implemented by PTT in Thailand. As mangrove forests continue to grow and mature in these restored areas, their benefits will extend well beyond shoreline protection. They will help sustain biodiversity, improve coastal stability, and provide natural protection for generations to come.
